Getting Back to You: Osteopractic Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation

by | Sep 13, 2023

Lucy is remembered as a resilient individual who managed to fight through her debilitating injury, to one day be able to “get back to you” – a testament to her strength. At Back to You Osteopractic Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation, the therapist specialized in physical and occupational therapies and provided Lucy with individualized treatment plans that focused on the rehabilitation of her upper extremities, helping her gain the milestones she fought so hard for.

Back to You Osteopractic Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation is a physical therapy and rehabilitation center in Royal Oak, Canton, and Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. The center provides a combination of physical therapy and occupational therapy. Physical therapy focuses on improving mobility and movement, particularly focusing on gross motor function, and pain reduction around the body, especially the spine and lower extremities. Occupational therapy helps with executive functioning tasks so that patients can be as independent as possible in their everyday activities. Occupational therapy also addresses cognition-related issues such as those resulting from traumatic brain injuries, motor vehicle accidents, or strokes. Both physical therapy and occupational therapy offer rehabilitative exercises and manual therapy to increase the range of motion and reduce pain. The end goal for both is clear – helping patients get “back to you”.

Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy

To illustrate this, this is Lucy’s journey, as one of the patients.

Two years ago, Lucy suffered an auto accident and after that sought physical therapy to alleviate her shoulder pain. Physical therapy was successful in relieving the pain, however, she had to undergo shoulder surgery which ended up causing nerve damage to her brachial plexus. After the surgery, Lucy experienced intense pain in her left arm and hand, which was unbearable on even the slightest touch or stimuli; furthermore, heat, cold, or different textures caused her immense discomfort. This made it difficult for her to continue with her regular day-to-day activities such as working, driving, and taking care of household tasks. As a result, she needed assistance with dressing, bathing, and all other self-care activities. Despite these obstacles, Lucy showed immense strength and perseverance to overcome them.

She was determined to get her life back on track and began working with an occupational therapist. The therapist used cutting-edge techniques such as cupping, joint mobilizations, massage, dry needling, electrical stimulation, desensitization, mirror therapy, water beads, and light manual therapy to help Lucy retrain and regain movement in her arm and hand. After two long years, Lucy has now regained control of her upper body and can perform her daily activities without any assistance.

The OT practitioners also taught her pain management strategies, such as breathing exercises, visualization, and positioning to help her manage the discomfort. As a result of this hard work, Lucy is now able to be independent at home, with the help of adaptive equipment and the H-wave electrical stimulation unit she was provided with.

She has seen great progress in her shoulder, arm, and hand strength and range of motion over the past year, and she has even returned to work full-time and taken up activities such as biking, working out at the gym, and golfing. Lucy continues to benefit from manual therapy techniques such as cupping, dry needling, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, and body tempering, helping her achieve all of her goals and live life without pain.

Back to You Osteopractic Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation is proud to have supported Lucy on her journey and to have enabled her to get back to doing the things she loves.

Mirror Therapy

Mirror Therapy is a revolutionary approach to physical therapy and rehabilitation that has proven to be extremely effective in helping patients recover from pain, injury, and disability. It uses a mirror box to create the illusion of movement in a paralyzed or weakened limb, allowing patients to see their progress as they work through their recovery. Mirror Therapy has been used to successfully treat a variety of conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and amputations.

Back to You Osteopractic Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation has proven itself as a center on which its patients—like Lucy—can depend. Benefitting from both their physical and occupational therapy services, patients facing pain, nerve damage, and adjustments in self-care capabilities can regain functionality through exercises and discomfort relief methods. Taken together, the comprehensive therapies at Back to You Osteopractic support challenging circumstances while fostering independence, mobility, coordination, and strength of Post-traumatic deficits; allowing patients to pick up life where they left off. With its individualized plans, ‘Back to You’ meets its namesake promise in full.
